The Blacks Ends Losing Streak with a Hard Fought Draw

Posted on August 21, 2011 at 10:25 AM

Coming into this game on the back of a horrendous seven defeat in a row, Harvester Football Club were determined not to go further down the downward spiral as they faced CBC in the last of their three match Agape Cup opponent series.

Boasted by a healthy squad despite late withdrawals and couple of no shows, the Blacks could even effort the rare luxury of ‘loaning’ out some players who came for trials to a depleted CBC team.

With the ESPZEN League slightly under a month away, HFC in the final stages of confirming their squad and with almost 95% of the team in place, they took this opportunity of having the trialist play against them.

1st Half

The Blacks lined up with Gopal in goal as Stanley, Vincent, Sai and Kahirul forming the backline, with Jason, Azman and Ian making up the central midfield trio. Leong and Wisley completed the set up when they supported Ranjeet in attack in a 4-3-3 formation.

The game started slowly as both teams were unwilling to exhaust themselves in the scorching heat. CBC did however start on the upper hand as the Blacks were more content to take a wait and see approach to the game.

Though the opponents were trying to find a breakthrough to the Blacks’ goal, the defence held fast and repelled whatever sporadic attacks that came their way. Not to be outdone, Gopal kept his concentration as he called into action when he brilliantly tipped over a stinging shot.

Having contained the game for the good twenty minutes, HFC made a tactical adjustment when they switched to a 4-4-1-1 as Leong and Wisely moved to the flanks and Ian played behind Ranjeet in attack. The change gave the Blacks an immediate impetus to attack as a lively Leong ruled the left wing with his intelligent runs. The first clear chance of the game fell to Ranjeet who got unto a through ball from the middle but was foiled by some quick goalkeeping.

The best chance of the half fell to Ian when some delightful play from the back starting with Kahirul who found Leong and with some swiftly interplay the latter released Ian with a pinpoint threaded ball. Ian however could only see his shot from a tight angle rise over cross bar.

The half came to a close with HFC controlling the game but was unable to be lethal in the final third of the pitch.

2nd Half

Number of changes was made during half time as Dominic, Jit, Kumar and Loga all came on to freshen by the team.

It was evident at this point that the heat was having an effect on both teams as the pace of the game slowed down drastically. Much of the game was being played in the middle of the park with occasional foray into each other’s third. Further changes were made when Bobos replaced Gopal in goal and Raj made a late entry.

HFC had the better of the chances as the fresh legs who were brought in tried to impress. Loga and Wisley had the best opportunities to win the game for the Blacks but they failed to hit the target with the chances presented to them.

Much of the second half remained uneventful as both teams cancelled each other out in the midfield with the weather playing a big part in any sluggishness.

The referee called the game to an end with both teams pleased with the hard fought goalless draw.

Though it was not the win that the Blacks wanted, in retrospective, they would be please in the knowledge that they had stopped the unenviable record of losing seven games in a row and that they had finally managed to keep a clean sheet in eight outings since middle of May 2011.

Positives can also be taken to the fact that, trialists Andrew and Marcus impressed as they are certain to add more variation to the team along with a possible return of HFC old boy Henry.
