HFC got their pre-season under way with a friendly game at Broadrick Secondary School. As years past, the first game is always well known for poor attendance and this time around was no different. Few players pulling out at the last moment caused much frustration and stress to the team in whole. HFC had to start with ten players, with one borrowed from the opponents.
HFC gave 16 year old goalkeeper Dion his debut as Kavin returned after a long absence.
1. Dion (GK)
2. Kavin (CD)
3. Leslie (CD)
4. Ryan (CD)
5. Jit (LWB)
6. Dominic (RWB)
7. Shah (CM)
8. Kannu (CM)
9. Azam (CM)
10. Sasi (ST)
Playing in their away strip, the game began brightly for HFC with Shah, Azam and Kannu controlling the midfield. Some neat inter-play between them was pleasing to the eye. The first fifteen minutes of the game was all HFC as they played the ball well with good link up play within the midfield and lively wingbacks. One such move provided the opening goal for HFC.
The ball being played from the right and Shah released the ball to Kannu on the left after some great one touch. Kannu cut the ball back to Azam on the edge of the box who took one sweet touch before powering in for the first goal of the game.
The difference in number and lack of fitness proved as the opponents fought back. They duly pulled a goal back when HFC failed to clear a corner which resulted in the opposing striker trashing the ball past the 16 year old goalie from a tight angle. It was soon 2-1 when Kavin’s attempt to clear the ball across the goal hit the goalie and went it for an own goal for the young keeper. Soon things got harder for HFC when Leslie limped off and Kevin struggled with an ankle injury. Things were not looking good for the Blacks as they were playing with nine men at times. Despite making some good saves, the young goalie was helpless to prevent the third goal passed him.
The first half ended with HFC trailing 3-1
The second half started somewhat on a better footing for HFC as another player was loan to them. Finally making it an eleven a side game. It proved to be the tonic HFC needed as they managed to control the game from then on. Sasi and Kannu were a constant threat to the opponents’ defence as they pressed hard. The persistence played off when Shah threaded through a great ball to Sasi who in typical fashion, marooned past the defence to power HFC a goal back. It could have been three a piece when Shah and Kannu linked up excellently in the centre circle with Shah looping in a delightful ball over the defence. Kannu timed his run to perfection, controlled it and was one on one with the keeper. He was unfortunate to see his placed shot just squeeze past the goal into the side netting. The opponents did score a fourth in the closing minutes of the game but that did not matter to HFC as they fulfilled their objective of gaining match fitness and can only be proud of the performance playing under strength for much of the first half.
