Hilderincs Commemorate 17 Years With Seven Goal Thriller

It was a perfect 17th Anniversary celebration for Hilderinc Football Club as they marked the special event with a celebratory match between the three Hilderinc sides on Saturday at the Merlion Sports City.

With the Hilderinc FC (HFC), along with the Hilderinc Ladies (HL) taking on Hilderinc Twā FC (HTFC), it was always going to be an interesting encounter, though the occasion of merriment was never forgotten in the midst of wanting to get one better over the other, keeping true to the Hilderinc competitive spirit.

Evenly poised with almost twenty players on both sides, the Saturday Blacks and the Ladies were the better starters, much against the pre-match predications from some quarters, who had expected the Twās to take advantage of the collage of players the former presented with.

The Twās who looked formidable with their strongest eleven had the first chance of the game when Kumaresan Maniam belted from range early in the game.

However, Simon Khaw in goal personified the Saturday Blacks’ arrogance with a save with nonchalance of the highest order.

With the score somehow level after a Logaraj Sundram lop than just bounced in front of the crossbar, HFC & HL, who were seconds earlier denied a clear penalty when goalkeeper turned centreback Liao Jincai’s in-slow motion foul was let go by the referee, kept their composure to take the lead when David Fridlund put the ball into the back of the net following good built up from skipper, Rama Witjaksono and Stepan Lobov on the edge of the box.

Spurred by the opener, the Blacks were in full flow and could have extended their lead after a six player move spanning the whole length of the pitch, involving Simon Khaw, Adib Alias, Hoonki Song, Xerxes Lim, Sharon Soon and David Fridlund.

Even the raft of changes made by Saturday Hilderincs, bringing in several guest players, Rachel Tan of the Hilderinc Ladies, veteran and committee member, Jit “Zed” Singh and former Black, Andrew Bai, failed to dampen the enthusiasm as they kept the initiative alive, and were unfortunate to not add to the tally as Gopal Peethambaran earn his keeps by denying them on both occasions, taking the score 1-0 into the break.

With the Twās employing a more regulated substitution strategy to keep the fold fresh worked to their advantage in the second half, especially with the sun paying full compliments for its part in the Hilderinc celebration.

And inside five minutes into the restart, Logaraj Sundram levelled score with a cool finish following a melee inside the box, and the Twās quickly took the lead with a Sashikumar Mahathevan typical thumping shot, in a double act of Hilderincs’ two deadly finishers.

However, HFC/ HL’s response was swift and within 45 seconds they could have taken the levelled the score but having rounded the keeper, Ian Morris was unable to see the ball through into goal from an acute angle, and similarly missed two another opportunities in quick success, first with a shot which just dropped behind the goal and again running out of pitch before application.

Having survived the hat-trick of near misses, Hilderinc Twā duly responded with their own fair, extending their lead further through Sashikumar Mahathevan who met Omar Mahnin’s weighted cross with a driving header.

But it was yet another quick reply from the Saturday side who responded through another David Fridlund smacker from distance.

In a game that went back and forth, Logaraj Sundram added sparkle with a deft finish for the Twās’ fourth, but Denis Lobov’s brother Stepan, would score soon after with another fine goal to setup a dramatic finish, though he could have level the score to share the spoils after cracking the post with an unstoppable close range shot.

However, at the end of a seven goal thriller, with many more glorious opportunities, it was a wonderful time of respect and celebration between all who turned up to enjoy the family atmosphere, that is uniquely Hilderincs’.

With both Saturday and Sunday sides gearing from the new seasons in their respective leagues, and with the Ladies, enthusiastically preparing themselves for competitive forays in the near future, it is indeed exciting times for the Hilderincs collectively, both on and off the pitch.

Final Score

Hilderinc FC/ Hilderinc Ladies  3    :    Hilderinc Twā FC  4
