It might have been only April, but that it not stop Hilderinc FC to go ahead of time with their display of festive niceties when they gift wrapped four goals, three in a five minute spell very early in the first half as they went down heavy in another visit to Jurong West.
Deprived of the anchoring effect of Denis Lobov and Antonio Cerveró in the defence, the latter withdrawn through illness, and coupled with late withdrawals of a host of defensive players, it was another round of mix and match as the Blacks played Russian roulette with the formation.
While the opening minutes were encouraging as the Blacks took the fight to their more illustrious opponents, but a dreadful five minute phase in bizarre circumstances, in most part unexplainable for any good logical reasons for such unwarranted show of charity, saw them 3-0 down with only ten minutes played.
Though the Blacks admirably restored parity in play after the calamitous start, nearly pulling a goal back after an exceptional Mike Rooke was deprived a goal when his header bounced off the crossbar, a sub-plot highly enticing for statisticians who keep record of the number of times the Blacks have been denied by the woodwork in the first nine games of their debut in the ESPZEN Saturday League since their transition from Sunday football, much of the damage was already done.
If the Hilderincs had at halftime, in all earnestness, had intended to rally back against the odds, the stakes swell further when they had decided that the gift giving was not over and compounded the day with a fourth hangout, an astonishing quartet of nod-in and tab-in goals for the Monkeys.
Although Axel Blomgren had kept the scoreline from inflating further with a couple of fine saves, he was only well and truly beaten by the fifth goal midway through the second period.
Despite the malaise, the Hilderincs finally aroused themselves in the final quarter of the game, turning the tide on the opponents.
Inspired by debutant Erdogan Albay, the Blacks did get a goal back after Rama Witjaksono converted from the spotkick after the former was apprehended in the box, but though only a fugacious reward for the delayed retaliation, the Hilderincs displayed their defiance in defeat.
And it will be their lionised defiance that will be needed to get them out of their current incomprehensible predicament as they entered the second half of a bewildering season.
