Hilderinc Twā Football Club started their maiden league game in the SG Merlion Challenge Cup 2017 with a narrow 2-1 defeat against Burmese side, May Kah FC.
A couple of no shows meant that the intended starting lineup was disrupted, hence the need to field Nicholas Ledenmark, Logaraj Sundram, Sashikumar Mahathevan and Rahmat Saring from the get go, despite them having played almost 90mins for Hilderincs FC on Saturday.
The Blacks started off with intent, stroking the ball around the pitch, pinning back the Burmese in their own half, threatening to score on a few occasions from shots coming from seasoned striker Sashikumar and Twās captain Logaraj, however, lack of precision meant the opposing keeper was rarely tested.
Just as HFTC was getting warmed up, May Kah drew first blood after a goal kick by faithful servant and current President, Simon Khaw, to left back David Zheng was intercepted by the Burmese, and a pot shot from outside the penalty box ended with the ball in the net.
Not to be deterred, HTFC restarted with more aggression, winning possession back in the opposing half, but for all the attacking prowess, credit to the HTFC defence marshalled by Azman Azmi, Nicholas Ledenmark, David Zheng and Chua Yuxuan, held their line well and with some last ditch tackles ensured the scoreline remained at 0-1.
The Blacks’ hard work and resilience finally paid off midway through the first half when a delicious cross from David Zheng into the box was met by Sashikumar Mahathevan, who nodded the down to Logaraj Sundram, whom in turn skipped past three May Kah defenders before slotting into the bottom corner.
However, the Blacks’ hard work was almost undone immediately when a miscommunication from a free kick went uncleared, leaving the Burmese only needing to poke the ball home, leaving HTFC trotting off the field at half time frustrated, but not dejected.
Changes at half time saw the returning Liao Jincai coming on for Simon Khaw in goal, Darren Tan partnering Matthew Joseph in midfield, Parthiban Aruchamy slotting at right back, Kumaresan Maniam dropping into left back for the injured David Zheng, while Joe Kyaw took up position at right midfield.
The second half was all HTFC’s show, with patient buildup and keeping possession of the ball, knowing that they were not able to match up to May Kah’s speed and energy for the full 90mins.
While the Burmese almost killed off the game towards full time when Nicholas Ledenmark was penalised for a handball in the eighteen yard box, with the defender receiving his marching orders consequently, but with the May Kah FC missing penalty, the Blacks rallied back but was unable to find the equaliser.
With key players running on empty towards the end was obvious, the match ended 2-1 in favour of May Kah FC.
