An unpractised Hilderinc FC side blew their chances and went from promotion hopefuls to relegation candidates in a stroke, after their surprise defeat against The Legacy FC, leaving them pressed into the corner with remaining games against heavyweights Singapore Panthers and Division 4 Champions elect Teban Thunders to come.
Returning after a three week break, the disruption was visible as the Blacks laboured against a side who were seeking redemption after they were comprehensively outgunned in the earlier encounter in the season.
The already lopsidedly top heavy Hilderincs were further rocked by the late withdrawal of Rama Witjaksono (work) and Denis Lobov (illness), leaving them with limited resources to manoeuver in essential sections, though the late inclusion of Sai Ganesh provided some saving grace.
Despite the obvious lack, the Blacks were faster off the blocks, looking for a quick break against the youthful opponent, and efforts from Gabir Nabil and Edward Philips provided early optimism.
However, the positive start was undone when The Legacy took a quick two goal lead against the run of play, hitting the Blacks with a couple of carbon copy goals, punishing them for their sluggishness in learning from their mistakes.
The Hilderincs’ response was swift however, but in the recurring story of the season, the woodwork played its part against the Blacks, after the crossbar denied Gabir Nabil another belter from outside the box with the keeper well stranded.
Heavy and sustained pressure from HFC finally reaped dividends when Maxence de Poulpiquet improvised intelligently to score from a corner, getting the Blacks into the game.
But it was goalkeeper, Suhairi Hassan who kept the Hilderincs in contention when he pulled off an outstanding reflex save from point blank, in what certainly looks like a save of the season front runner.
Hitting the post again, the Blacks came close to levelling the game with further chances but were unable to see the desired outcome with each effort, going into the break.
If the second half started with renewed focus for the Hilderincs, an early unfortunate slip in the box allowed The Legacy to score their third through their talisman, Jerome, whom the entire team profited from, because apart from the forwards’ goals and his miracle save, the Blacks keeper was an untroubled pedestrian for much of the game.
Frustrated with going behind again, the Blacks pressed hard to find a way back into the game yet again, but having doubled their lead, The Legacy played a smart game of holding tight at the back, leaving the Hilderincs to break them down.
Doing all they could do and coming close, especially from a guilt-edge opportunity from Ian Morris, who got his header utterly wrong yards in front goal, the Hilderincs finally broke through the yellow wall, when Man of Match, Maxence de Poulpiquet turned provider, slipping through Logaraj Sundram with a fine through ball, which the forward was never going to miss.
From an Alex Wong header which was cleared off the line, a genuine penalty claim from Gabir Nabil, and close efforts from Sashikumar Mahathevan, Sai Ganesh and Maxence de Poulpiquet, the Black all but threw the kitchen sink at The Legacy, but fell short as they run out of time.
While positives of a commendable display despite being heavily improvised can be taken, three points lost will certainly take its effect as the Hilderincs drop into the bottom three; but while they cannot descent any further, a possible relegation cannot be discounted as well, and their final two mammoth fixtures will not provide any relief either.
