In the company of many seasoned women’s teams in Singapore, the Hilderinc Ladies boldly stood toe to toe in their first ever competition when they took part in the AFC/ FAS Women’s Day 7s on Sunday.

The admirable Ladies, forming two teams, took on the likes of Tanjong Pagar, Warriors, Woodlands Wellington, Arion FA, Winchester Isla and Simei United’s Saberettes from the FAS Women’s Leagues, amongst others in their maiden exposure to the wider women’s football since their formation in May 2017.

While the Hilderinc B, insisting of Elizabeth Pang, Hannah Tan, Chad Ong, Estella Pingol, Rachel Tan, Camila Walter, Sarah Sitbon and Denise Ng, had the shorter end of the stick with a tougher group consisting of girls from Woodland Wellington, Warriors, Winchester Isla, and an impressive Somesing Goose side, many with experienced league players from various levels, and coupled with curious fixture planning, which had them play consecutive games with limited break time during the midday heat, the Hilderinc Ladies were never short on effort and spirit throughout, as they gave their maximum, even matching up to their more well-drilled opponents.

Equally challenged by the likes of Tanjong Pagar, Arion FA and Saberettes, led by Sharon Soon, the Hilderinc A with Coco Lord, Jamie Koh, El Tham, Lourdes Sanchez, Elena Gonzalez, Martha Rodriguez-Guerra, Siha Lawrence and Kai Ning, came within a shout of progressing into the semi-finals, with hotshot Martha giving the opposing defenders a nightmare.

Though five ankles and a wrist were strapped, and even with Elena visiting the hospital, the spirits of the Hilderinc Ladies were in elevation, and they were already looking forward to getting back to training on Wednesday even after the day was done.

It may have been the first step, but it is certain that the Hilderinc Ladies’ foray into competitive action will not be the last.
